For those wondering why there have been no posts over the last week, there’s a far better reason than the fact that I’ve been too busy.

In fact, there have been a number of post-able items that I’ve wanted to write about, but haven’t because they would have been lost forever into the infinite land of Al Gore’s Internet.

Very soon, the Hour Publishing Co. will be flicking the switch on a new website. As part of this grand plan, we’ve had more than 90,000 different stories/blog items/photos/etc. transferred to the future. Any blog items that were posted after a certain date, would not be transferred and would disappear once we switched over to the new site.

(For example, this one … once the button is pressed will become obsolete. Or, so I’ve been told).

That being said the new website is going to make things much better for us as writers and bloggers and the other people bringing you the news and more.

So please be patient. By the weekend, by the grace of Gore, we’ll be up and running and blogging and bringing Warrior Nation the news it expects.

The senior lefty hurler mowed down the Putnam High School Clippers in a strong performance that gave the Warriors their first win of the season.

Furnival struck out 13 Putnam batters while giving up just three hits and walking only one better. He only threw 93 pitches in a strong performance.

“Garrett gave us what we needed,” said Wilton High pitching coach Mark Ketley. “He showed command of the strike zone all day, and mixed his pitches well.”

It was a solid debut by the crafty southpaw and a positive lift for the Warriors, who lost an nine-inning game to Fairfield Ludlowe in the season opener and fell to Weston 8-4, after leading 4-2 entering the bottom of the sixth.

Ludlowe 5, Wilton 4 (9 innings)

Mikey Arman singled home Jake Routier in the top of the ninth inning, giving Fairfield Ludlowe a 5-4 win over the host Warriors. The Falcons had trailed 3-0 before coming back to tie the game and force the extra innings.

Paul Merolla went eight innings, but his team stranded 10 runners as the Warriors fell. For Wilton, which had 11 hits, Andrew Jacobson had a triple, single and two RBIs while Sean Osgood had a two-run triple and a single. Merolla and Brett Phillips had two singles each.

Wilton gets a chance to bounce back today at Weston.

SOFTBALL

Ludlowe 4, Wilton 0

Aliza Guerrero fired a one-hitter, giving Fairfield Ludlowe a 4-0 win over Wilton in season-opening softball action on Wednesday.

Megan Stanzione was the lone Warrior to reach base via a hit as she singled.

Hard-luck loser Dani Miskinis scattered six hits, striking out one and walking three.

Wilton travels to Joel Barlow today.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Game was not reported. We can confirm Wilton won, but no idea on score or scorers, unfortunately.

The Wilton boys lacrosse team — the defending Class M state champs — are being picked as the No. 5 team in the New Haven Register’s Boys Lacrosse Preseason poll.

The Warriors, who went 16-6 a year ago and earned the No. 1 spot as the state’s best team, were selected behind three FCIAC teams and Fairfield Prep.

It was actually Darien topping the list with 136 points and 12 first-place votes. Prep was second with 112 points (and 2 first place votes) and was followed by Ridgefield (106), New Canaan (105) and Wilton (94). Greenwich (49), McMahon (41), Cheshire (28), Simsbury (25) and Staples (20) rounded out the top 10.

St. Joseph, which was the No. 10 team in last year’s final poll fell out of the top 10. The Cadets did receives votes, however, along with Glastonbury, Joel Barlow, New Fairfield, Newtown, Conard and Xavier.

It would be fair to say that this most recent basketball season in Wilton was one of the best seasons, overall, in Warrior Nation in probably a generation.

The girls team advanced to the FCIAC tournament semifinals and also made it two rounds into the Class L state tournament for the second straight year. The boys, meanwhile, were in the hunt to sneak in the back door of the FCIAC playoffs and also won their first state tournament game before running into Trinity Catholic in the second round.

So what does Wilton’s fellow FCIAC coaches think of that?

How about just five kids total — three girls, two boys — being honored by the league in the postseason awards.

The most ridiculous omission — at least in my opinion — was the exclusion of Chris Nugent off the All-FCIAC Second Team.

If he was measured just on the second half of the season, then Nugent easily would have been a First-Teamer. While there is plenty of talent on that first team, I could make a case for at least two of the players who didn’t have the kind of year of Nugent had. But again talent is as talent does and all six players named to the — ahem — five-man first team can make a case for being there, too.

To leave him off the Second Team? That’s a shame that coaches who vote wouldn’t give a player his just due.

Thankfully, Nugent is one of those who kids whose team success is far more important than any individual accomplishment. He’ll take his “All-East” honor and proudly recall it more as the year he and the Warriors returned to the state tournament, beat Danbury, Norwalk, McMahon and FCIAC finalists Bridgeport Central, while battling a number of other city schools tough.

On the girls side, meanwhile, at least Casey Pearsall and Maddy Fulton were given consideration as Second Team selections. Again, use the right stats and the right arguments and you could swap out either of those players with a couple of players on the First Team.

But the one that got my goat more so was Alyssa Malvarosa being buried with an honorable mention.

All told, 25 kids were honored as First, Second or Third Team selections.

Anybody who tells me Malvarosa isn’t one of the best 25 all-around players in the FCIAC doesn’t know basketball.

But, again, she’s the kind of player who does the dirty work, who grabs the rebounds, scores the garbage buckets and plays defense, and makes such a difference on her team that if you took her off of it, it’s a different season.

But, if you ask the FCIAC coaches, it seems as though Wilton’s not much of a basketball town. So why give their players credit, right?

Thankfully, Wilton has the kind of players where it’s all about the team and not about the awards.

Kobyra sparked a Wilton team that got off to a slow start (0-7) and qualified for the FCIAC Tier 1 playoffs, which put them in the top six of the regular season. And Meissner was a season-long stalwart on defense, helping to allow the Wilton offense find itself while keeping the Warriors in games throughout the season.
